Turn a negative disorder, anxiety or depression, into a positive outcome for life. How many suffer labels – You have anxiety, You have depression.
These labels then progress into identifying us; who we are, what we feel and the expectation we place upon ourself.
At times many do suffer from and experience, anxiety or depression. There is also a significant degree of people that are labelled inappropriately and for life. We are humans, we will at times feel anxious, overwhelmed, fearful or deeply sad. This does not mean something is wrong with us, it means we currently feel this way and need to take steps to rectify the reason why. Unfortunately taking a pill does not enable us to process these emotions, they treat only the symptom, not the cause. Perhaps a reason why our mental health issues continue to rise. The we really need to differentiate between a mental illness and an emotional issue. Often we are experiencing an emotional overload caused by events, relationships or occurrences in our lives. This does not mean for a moment that you have a mental health disorder.
I ask the question to a person that comes into the Therapy room stating they have anxiety or they have depression. “Do you have anxiety as you sleep? What about when you are enjoying a family dinner, out with friends or watching a funny movie or comedy show?” So far every person has said, “well no, I don’t”. Then they add, “but I do feel anxious some other times”.
I then ask if they have ever had the flu, they usually answer yes. I ask “do you have the flu as you sleep? What about when you are enjoying a family dinner, out with friends or watching a funny movie or comedy show?” They say a resounding yes. Because they actually have the flu.
I discuss with them about giving their label of anxiety or depression another name, to obliterate the current disorder name. I ask them to provide me with the actual name of what they feel. Most every time those with anxiety stated they feel fear and those labelled with depression state they are sad or feel overwhelmed.
Process the feeling of anxiety or depression
After we discuss strategies to manage their feeling of fear or feeling overwhelmed, we begin talking about the ways they can start making adjustments to the way they think, behave and respond to situations. The beneficial process of a hypnotherapy session allows them to relax and clear their mind. Positive suggestions are embedded to create the subconscious change they want, to create new responses, thoughts, attitudes and feelings.
Often the individual can remove the curse of Anxiety and Depression. This is not to say some people are in dire need of drug therapy. However, I find many of those who are prescribed drugs, can take back their control, manage their own thoughts and behaviours to make the positive changes they want and need in their life. It is giving power and control back to the person rather than handing your control and processes over to a pill. After all, the initial reason for prescribing drugs was to assist the person time to process their feelings and obtain professional support. The latter has been sadly missed, yet is the one thing that can help in most cases.
It is astonishing the escalation of people being prescribed drug medication for ‘mental illness’ when many have a temporary ’emotional issue’ they can process naturally with professional support. We should not be a society identified by mental illness. We have excessive pressure, busy lifestyles, heavy demands, and this is what overwhelms us. We must find ways to manage and lower these pressures. Far too many of us are suffering needlessly with Anxiety and Depression when so many can regain their sense of self and control. Once we can do this, order comes to our disorder. Not because of drugs or pills but due to self-awareness, new found control and an improved mindset. In a recent study on antidepressant mediation, it was stated that “millions more people around the world should be prescribed pills or offered talking therapies (Counselling / Psychotherapy), which work equally well for moderate to severe depression, say the doctors, noting that just one in six people receive proper treatment in the rich world”. Again this points to the fact we are treating the symptom with pills instead of managing the cause through Counselling and Psychotherapy or Hypnotherapy treatment. Further the report stated “Antidepressants can be an effective tool to treat major depression, but this does not necessarily mean antidepressants should always be the first line of treatment”.
Surely most individuals prefer to manage their feelings and emotions at the cause, instead of subjecting themselves to drugs which often have detrimental side effects. No information was provided on time length to consume these harmful drugs. People staying on antidepressants for decades believing the drug is working. We can fail to recognise we have processed the issue and the drug is not actually doing anything positive for us.
